History runs deep here, starting in 1710 when Swiss and German settlers established the town and named it after Bern, Switzerland. It soon became North Carolina's first colonial capital, home to the lavish Tryon Palace, which has been carefully reconstructed alongside heritage gardens and the North Carolina History Center. During the Civil War, Union forces occupied the city, turning it into a haven for thousands of formerly enslaved people who established roots here, organized United States Colored Troops regiments, and founded the historic community of James City right across the river.
