New Florence, PA

New Florence was incorporated as a Westmoreland County borough on May 27, 1865, along the Pennsylvania Railroad corridor beside the Conemaugh River. The railroad placed the borough in the valley’s movement and industrial network, while its name came from Florence, Italy. The 2020 census counted 671 residents. Today the borough’s map still includes the practical pieces of a small municipal center: borough offices, a post office, utilities, school links, and a community library.

The New Florence Community Library has served the surrounding area since 1964. It began with 300 volumes in an elementary-school basement, moved into its current building in 1968, and now holds over 20,000 items. The library’s history gives the borough a useful window into how a small rail community built an institution for itself and its neighbors. Borough calendars bring together library programs, farmers-market and vendor events, volunteer-fire-company activities, and council meetings. New Florence is a small rail-valley borough whose everyday institutions reach beyond its own population to the surrounding communities.
