About New Hamburg

New Hamburg is a Dutchess County hamlet at the southern tip of the Town of Poughkeepsie, where Wappinger Creek widens into the Hudson River. Rivermen called the rocky point High Point, and the waterfront later handled lime, pig iron, farm goods, and building supplies; the old lime dock area is now near the New Hamburg Yacht Club. The hamlet remains the town's only commuter-rail station and its most accessible waterfront, with a marina, Bowdoin Park to the north, and the Fran Reese Audubon Sanctuary along the creek. New Hamburg is a Hudson River place where boat traffic, rail travel, wetlands, and old industrial shoreline still meet.
