New Hartford, NY

New Hartford is a village inside the town of the same name, just southeast of Utica in Oneida County. Jedediah Sanger arrived in 1788, bought land along Sauquoit Creek, and built a sawmill in 1789 followed by a gristmill in 1790. The creek powered tanneries, nail works, carpet and knitting mills, paper mills, and canneries as the settlement grew. The village incorporated in 1870, and New Hartford had 1,859 residents in 2020. For a while, turnpike traffic made New Hartford a serious commercial rival to Utica.

The Erie Canal then pulled cross-state trade toward Utica, but the village kept its own center, churches, shops, and mill-era streets. Today the village sits beside the larger town’s commercial corridor, with Sauquoit Creek and the old village grid still giving the place its shape. New Hartford is a compact Mohawk Valley village whose story starts with waterpower and keeps going alongside the city that became the region’s main hub. Sauquoit Creek still gives the village its clearest thread.
