About New Iberia

New Iberia is an Acadiana city in south Louisiana, southeast of Lafayette, with deep Spanish, French, Creole, and Cajun roots. The city traces its founding to 1779, when Spanish colonists led by Francisco Bouligny settled the area along Bayou Teche. New Iberia is known for the Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival, nearby Avery Island and Tabasco country, and its literary connection to James Lee Burke's fictional detective Dave Robicheaux. It is a working bayou city with history, food culture, and sugarcane country all close at hand.
