New Jerusalem, PA

New Jerusalem is a Berks County census-designated place in Rockland Township, up in the South Mountains where Manatawny Creek drains toward the Schuylkill. The name sounds grand; the ground is practical: wooded slopes, farms, stone outcrops, narrow roads, and a small settlement threaded through a mountain valley. Rockland Township's historic landscape includes lime kilns, old forges and mills, and a granite operation near New Jerusalem, reminders that local creeks once carried water to working sites as well as farms.

The church history is part of that old map. New Jerusalem Reformed Church dates to 1830, and New Jerusalem Lutheran Church to 1840, giving the community two long-running landmarks in the surrounding rural landscape.
