Founded in the 1830s by German immigrants, New Knoxville is a quiet, close-knit village surrounded by the open farmland of Auglaize County. The community got its start around a local mill and trading post, eventually adding "New" to its name in 1858 after postal officials noted another Knoxville already existed in Ohio.
