New Lenox, IL

Rail shaped New Lenox before incorporation and still structures travel beyond the village. Settlement began in the late 1820s near what is now Route 30 and Gougar Road, and the community later grew beside the Rock Island Railroad. It was first called Tracey for a railroad superintendent, then renamed New Lenox after the surrounding township. Illinois certified the village's incorporation on October 4, 1946. Today New Lenox lies in Will County southwest of Chicago, near Interstates 80 and 355, with two Metra stations. The Route 30 station is on the Rock Island District to LaSalle Street, while Laraway Road is on SouthWest Service to Union Station. New Lenox had 27,214 residents in 2020, and the July 2025 estimate was 28,893.

Public activity gathers at the Village Commons, where the 2026 calendar included Thursday farmers markets, Wednesday movie nights, concerts, car shows, and performances by community groups. The New Lenox Public Library supports another set of routines through its Studio, 3D printing and digitization services, technology help, and annual programs such as Maker Day and the Summer Learning Challenge. The Community Park District manages 40 park sites and athletic fields across the village and township. At Hibernia Park, a nine-acre stocked lake is paired with a half-mile paved exercise trail, an accessible boat dock, a splash pad, a playground, and seasonal small-boat rentals.
