New Lisbon, WI

New Lisbon is a Juneau County city built around the Lemonweir River and the timber traffic that once ran along it. The 2020 census counted 1,748 residents. Ho-Chunk people used this area as a seasonal winter hunting and trapping camp before the land changed hands through an 1836 treaty. Amasa Wilson and C.B. Smith arrived in 1838 to cut lumber; by 1842-43, a sawmill and log boom were turning the river into a working corridor. Wilson platted the village in 1855. It first went by Mill Haven, then took the name New Lisbon.

That old river-and-rail settlement is now also a gateway to Castle Rock Lake and the I-90/I-94 corridor. County roads pull the city toward the lake, and the Lemonweir still gives the place its geographic center. New Lisbon Correctional Institution, a medium-security state prison built in 2004, is one of the city's major modern landmarks. The interesting part of New Lisbon is the overlap: a place that began with a winter camp, a lumber boom, and a renamed village now sits beside a large reservoir and an interstate route, with Wilson's river town still underneath it.
