New Madison, OH

New Madison is a Darke County village whose present name came after two failed starts. Zadock Smith platted the site in 1817 for land speculation, but the lots did not sell. Ernestus Putnam bought the land two years later, replatted it in 1831, and built the community that followed; he named it for Madison, Indiana. The 2020 census counted 840 residents. The village sits in western Ohio's farm country, with county roads carrying traffic toward Greenville and the Indiana line.

That early land story still fits New Madison's present scale. The village office, council meetings, public records, local ordinances, and community events give it its own civic rhythm, while county links connect residents to the sheriff, emergency management, health care, and the county fair. Schools and churches tie New Madison to the surrounding rural area, and the streets remain compact enough for the old village plan to matter. New Madison is a place built by replanning: a speculative plat became a working village once people, services, and institutions gathered around the lots.
