New Market, IN

New Market is a Montgomery County town with 559 people at the 2020 census, down from 636 in 2010. It lies in southern Montgomery County, northwest of Indianapolis, west of U.S. 231 and east of State Road 47, about seven miles south of Crawfordsville. Rattlesnake Creek passes just northeast before joining Sugar Creek, a Wabash River tributary. That gives New Market a distinctly southern-Montgomery-County setting, with county-seat errands close by and a rural road map around town.

The place grew around movement and school. An earlier rail line connected communities between Frankfort, Crawfordsville, and Terre Haute; the route later passed to the Pennsylvania Railroad and was abandoned in the 1970s. South Montgomery Community School Corporation serves the area through New Market Elementary, Southmont Junior High, and Southmont High School. For current local life, the Montgomery County visitors bureau points to the New Market Fish Fry each September, a town event that puts the name on the county calendar.
