About New Providence

Two rail stops give New Providence a notable commuter footprint within one compact borough. New Providence and Murray Hill stations both serve NJ Transit's Gladstone Branch, and each has bicycle racks and municipally operated parking. Much of the Murray Hill neighborhood lies inside the borough, so the station name reflects a local district rather than a separate municipality. Springfield Avenue closes for the Pioneer Day street fair, while the local business community also supports downtown trick-or-treating, Fall Fest, a Holiday Walk, and a six-week summer music series at Centennial Park. The 2026 concerts paired live bands and line-dancing sessions with children's activities and refreshments. The Passaic River forms New Providence's northern edge, and Oakwood Park turns that setting into daily recreation.

Its facilities include turf and baseball fields, basketball and bocce courts, a nature trail, canoe launch, picnic pavilion, playground, restrooms, and an ice-skating pond. In July 2026, work began on an inclusive playground with wheelchair-accessible rides, sensory activities, shade canopies, rubber surfacing, new paths, and updated bathrooms. Three public grants supplied $874,000, and the borough expected construction to finish in mid-August. The community's older history remains visible on Springfield Avenue at the Salt Box Museum, a former house holding artifacts that reach back before the American Revolution and offering free admission. Early settlers called the area Turkey or Turkey Town; the present landscape links that colonial record with the rail stations, river park, and recurring downtown events that residents use now.
