About New Salem

New Salem is a York County borough incorporated in 1876, a small crossroads community with a name that had to be adjusted for the postal map. The village was called Neffstown in the nineteenth century; a post office named Pine Hill opened in 1848, and the borough grew around the crossroads, stores, hotels, and the old York County farm landscape. In 1874, the post office name changed to York New Salem because another Pennsylvania post office already used New Salem. The local shorthand is George Street crossroads, York New Salem, North Codorus Township, and a borough that still carries two names depending on the context.
