New Sharon, IA

New Sharon is a one-square-mile Mahaska County city developed in 1856, about 12 miles north of Oskaloosa, 17 miles south of Grinnell, and 15 miles east of Pella. The 2020 census counted 1,262 residents. Edward Quaintance erected the first building, and the town's location among those larger regional centers gives its main street a wider set of connections than the population number alone suggests. The route between these towns keeps New Sharon in a regional loop.

North Mahaska Community School District is the town's most visible shared institution, serving roughly 600 students from preschool through twelfth grade. North Mahaska High School and its athletic program, city golf courses, Mahaska Rural Water, and county services all belong to the surrounding public circuit. With City Hall on North Main Street and the school campus close by, New Sharon's present-day map is a small civic center linked to the countryside and to the larger Iowa towns around it. School events and city services keep that wider connection local.
