New Smyrna Beach's public spaces face both the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Lagoon. Downtown occupies the mainland west of the lagoon system, while the Coronado Beach Bridge crosses the Intracoastal Waterway to the barrier island. The city added “Beach” to its name in 1947 after annexing Coronado Beach, and that mainland-beachside geography still organizes local destinations. New Smyrna Beach had 30,142 residents at the 2020 census. At the north end of the barrier island, county-managed Smyrna Dunes Park occupies 184 acres along Ponce de Leon Inlet. More than two miles of wide, accessible elevated boardwalk cross the site, with overlooks toward the ocean, Indian River, and inlet. A 300-foot accessible fishing pier, picnic pavilions, and dog-friendly swimming areas on the river shore support uses beyond a conventional beach access. Across the lagoon, the Marine Discovery Center treats the estuary as a working classroom.

Its 22-acre campus includes aquariums and live specimens, a five-acre restored salt marsh, native gardens, a nature play area, trails, and a kayak launch. Guided boat and kayak outings, conservation projects, children's programs, and adult field programs extend that work onto the water. The arts have similarly permanent local institutions. Atlantic Center for the Arts is a multidisciplinary artist-residency organization founded in 1977; its community work includes exhibitions, lectures, arts-and-wellness projects, and children's programs. In June 2026, it ran separate summer art camps for elementary and middle-school students at its main campus and Yurick Studio. Downtown routines are more frequent than festival schedules: Old Fort Park's farmers market operates every Saturday morning near the city marina and Canal Street, while the July 2026 city calendar included weekly concerts at Riverside Park and recurring events on Flagler Avenue.
