New Stuyahok, AK

Set along the bluffs of the Nushagak River, New Stuyahok is a close-knit Yup'ik village of around 500 people in southwest Alaska. Located roughly 50 miles upriver from Dillingham, the community sits right in the heart of the Bristol Bay watershed. Since there are no roads leading into town, getting around depends on small planes and the river. Residents travel by boat in the warmer months and take snowmachines across the frozen trails and river ice in the winter.

Local life centers around traditional subsistence and strong community ties. Rich annual salmon runs, moose hunting, and berry picking fill family freezers and set the rhythm of each season. The Chief Ivan Blunka School acts as the main gathering place in town, bringing everyone together for basketball games, cultural celebrations, and community events.
