New Waterford, OH

New Waterford is a Columbiana County village laid out in 1851 by John and Robert Silliman as Bull Creek, ahead of the railroad. The first train reached Bull Creek Station in 1852, and the village later took the New Waterford name from Waterford, Ireland. Rail traffic, mills, coal, and carriage manufacturing turned the settlement into a trading center; the Koch Brothers’ carriage works became one of its best-known employers. The village grew from 60 residents in 1860 to 1,347 by 1900 and incorporated in 1900.

Today, village hall links the old industrial story to practical routines: police, fire and EMS, cemetery care, water and sewer, streets, parks, events, planning, zoning, and income-tax information all sit in one local-government menu. The old mill dam and millrace remain in the park, while Crestview Local Schools serve students through elementary, middle, and high school. New Waterford is about 20 miles south of Youngstown, but its town center still carries the feel of a place built around a station, a mill, and merchants who served the surrounding countryside.
