Newark, NJ

Newark is New Jersey's largest city, shaped by centuries of history, working-class roots, and strong neighborhood pride. If you ask anyone about the best food in town, they will point you straight to the Ironbound. Centered along Ferry Street, this dense neighborhood is packed with Portuguese bakeries, Spanish tapas bars, and lively Brazilian rodizios where dinner is an all-night affair. When you need a break from the bustle, the North Ward offers Branch Brook Park, home to the largest collection of cherry blossom trees in the country. Come April, its winding paths, waterways, and green lawns draw visitors from across the state, giving residents a scenic outdoor retreat right along the Newark Light Rail.

Convenience is one of the biggest perks of living in Newark, especially for commuters. Newark Penn Station sits right downtown, offering PATH trains into Manhattan alongside NJ Transit commuter lines and Amtrak service up and down the East Coast. That makes getting into New York City fast and relatively painless. Having Newark Liberty International Airport right nearby also takes the headache out of frequent travel. A few blocks inland, University Heights brings steady student energy to the neighborhood, anchored by Rutgers-Newark, NJIT, and Essex County College.

Downtown Newark also has a vibrant cultural footprint. The New Jersey Performing Arts Center hosts touring concerts, comedy shows, and dance recitals, while the Newark Museum of Art and the historic Ballantine House offer fantastic exhibits. Sports fans and music lovers regularly pack the Prudential Center for New Jersey Devils hockey games and arena tours. With light rail connecting the train stations, college campuses, and green spaces, Newark brings together easy transit, incredible global food, and genuine neighborhood roots in one place.
