About Newark
Newark's Octagon Earthworks became fully open to the public on January 1, 2025, replacing the limited access associated with the site's former golf-course use. A 20-acre circle and 50-acre octagon join through a short passage at the North 33rd Street site, while Wright Earthworks preserves part of a square enclosure elsewhere in the city and the Great Circle survives in neighboring Heath. The Octagon and Great Circle are two components of the eight-site Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks property inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023. Built between 2,000 and 1,600 years ago, the series preserves monumental geometric enclosures whose designs align with solar and lunar cycles. Today the Newark sites open during daylight hours, the Octagon has a year-round visitor center, and Ohio History Connection schedules guided tours, full-moon programs, lectures, and school activities. Present-day recreation extends well beyond the earthworks. Newark maintains more than 20 parks and facilities and 11 miles of bicycle trails.
Everett Park combines a skate park with a playground, dog park, community garden, disc golf, and ballfields; Horns Hill supplies a dedicated mountain-bike trail system; and city programming includes fishing derbies and a summer concert series. Higher education has another visible footprint. Ohio State Newark and Central Ohio Technical College share buildings, classrooms, support staff, and operating costs while retaining separate faculties and degrees, a partnership that marked its 55th year in 2026. Newark grew from 49,934 residents in the 2020 census to an estimated 51,473 in 2025. Its 2020-2024 housing mix was nearly even: owners occupied 56 percent of homes, with a median value of $192,300 and median mortgage-holder costs of $1,285 per month; median gross rent was $973. Median household income was $61,670, and workers' mean travel time was 23 minutes.
