Newark Valley, NY

Newark Valley is a Tioga County town in New York’s Southern Tier, northwest of Binghamton, with the village of the same name at its center. Permanent settlement began around 1791 as Brown’s Settlement. The town became Westville in 1823, Newark in 1824, and Newark Valley in 1862, after settlers wanted a name that would distinguish it from another Newark. Owego Creek runs through the town, while Routes 38 and 38B tie the valley to surrounding communities.

Newark Valley Central School is the largest local employer and serves several towns, giving the village a school-centered daily rhythm. Trout Ponds Park hosts recreation and community events, and the Bement-Billings Homestead provides the setting for the annual Apple Festival. Belcher-Holden Farm, Blewer Farm, West Newark School House, and Searlestown Cemetery preserve pieces of the area’s early settlement story. The town’s older economy also followed waterpower: wheel factories once used Spring Brook, and Main Street began as a trail linking the Susquehanna River with the Onondaga salt springs. Newark Valley is a rural town where a creek, school, park, farms, and old roads still line up with the history.
