Newburg borough (Clearfield County), PA

Newburg is a borough at the northern end of Chest Township in Clearfield County, set along Chest Creek and the old rail lines that once tied the valley to the wider county. The first post office was called Hurd, after Henry Hurd, who built the first dwelling on the present town site. Newburg took its borough form in 1885, and the Pennsylvania & Northwestern Railroad reached the town in 1887, turning a small settlement into a business center for the surrounding area. The post office later changed its name from Hurd to La Jose in honor of local resident George Jose, which is why the map carries more than one name for the same place.
