Newburg, WI

Newburg is a village split between Washington and Ozaukee counties on the Milwaukee River. Barton Salisbury built a dam here in 1848 to power feed and saw mills, and the village's early work revolved around that waterpower. One mill ran until 1903; the other closed in 1939. The dam was removed in 2012 after repeated repairs, shifting the river corridor from mill power toward habitat and water access.

That change is visible along the former dam site: the raceway now includes a multi-use trail, observation deck, improved fishing access, and a kayak and canoe launch, with 37 mainstream river miles reopened for aquatic passage toward Grafton and West Bend. Village parks include Grotelueschen President's, Falkner, Dr. Weber, Freedom, and Fireman's; a community center, restaurants, taverns, and village services fill out the nearby civic map. Village public works also covers parks, community-center upkeep, recycling, snowplowing, brush chipping, and road repairs. Newburg's two-county identity stays tied to the Milwaukee River, even as the old industrial site serves recreation and habitat today.
