Newfield, NY

Newfield is a Tompkins County community southwest of Ithaca, spread along the West Branch of the Cayuga Inlet and the broad glacial valley called Pony Hollow. Settlers clustered near the water, Eliakim Dean built a sawmill in 1809 and a grist mill two years later, and by 1836 the town had 21 mills. Newfield took its current name in 1822, after the early settlement era had begun to settle into a working mill town.

The Newfield Covered Bridge, built in 1853, is the town’s signature artifact and remains in daily use, with a picnic area near Town Hall. A one-room schoolhouse built in 1887 was moved intact to the Newfield Central School grounds, keeping old desks and blackboards close to present-day classrooms. Newfield also carries a conservation story: abandoned farms were turned into conservation lands during the Depression, and the town now includes forest, creek, and preserve country along Route 13. Newfield’s local scoop is the way mills, bridges, schools, and conservation all reuse the same valley.
