Newport, NE

Newport was established around 1880 when the railroad reached Rock County, and its name came from the Newport bridge over the Niobrara River. That bridge remains the village's clearest geographic reference: the river forms Rock County's northern boundary, with ranch and farm roads leading toward Bassett, the county seat. County information places the area in the Bassett Grade School and Rock County High School districts, so education and county services are reached outside the village. Newport's present setting is a small rail-era settlement within the Niobrara and Sandhills landscape.
