Newport, NY

West Canada Creek is the reason Newport has a center at all. Benjamin Bowen and Christopher Hawkins were among its first permanent settlers; their homes stood by the creek, and a sawmill and inn followed by 1793. The village incorporated in 1857 after water power had drawn a gristmill, cotton sheeting factory, tannery, wagon shops, tool factory, canning works, and milk condensery. A four-arched stone bridge built in 1853 still spans the creek, tying the historic village center to the road and industrial geography that shaped it.

Newport's present-day center is still on Main Street, where the village's History Center occupies a historic limestone building and holds records, antiques, and genealogy material from 1790 onward. The village library, nearby shops, restaurants, bank, and post office give the center everyday destinations alongside its older buildings. The surrounding Town of Newport reaches toward the Oneida County line, while West Canada Creek continues toward the Mohawk River. The James Keith House and Brown-Morey-Davis Farm, both listed on the National Register in 2014, extend the historic record beyond the village streets.
