Newry, SC

Newry lies in the Little River Valley of Oconee County, tucked beside Lake Keowee and surrounded by ridges, forest, and the old dam that once powered the Courtenay textile mill. The mill village was established in the 1890s, with a company store and post office, church, mill offices, and rows of worker houses arranged around Broadway and the mill complex. Most of the surviving buildings date from 1893 to 1910, giving Newry one of the Upstate's clearest mill-village landscapes.

The river and dam still set the pace of the place. Newry's historic district holds about 118 properties, including duplex worker houses, the village church, the company store, and industrial buildings, while Lake Keowee now brings boating and lakeside recreation to the wider area. The old village is small and residential, with the surrounding ridges keeping its history visually close. Newry feels like a community where textile work, waterpower, and the lake country overlap, an Upstate South Carolina place whose past remains visible along the road and river.
