Newtok, AK

Newtok is a Yup'ik village that recently completed a full relocation to Mertarvik. After years of watching their riverbanks wash away with every storm, the entire community decided to rebuild nine miles across the water on solid bedrock. The move began in 2019 and wrapped up in late 2024, setting up a fresh town with new homes, a clinic, and a local school staffed by Yugtun-speaking teachers. Today, residents are settled into Mertarvik, keeping their close-knit traditions and culture alive on much safer ground.
