Newton, AL

Newton is a Dale County town founded in 1843 after the creation of Coffee County made the older county seat sit off-center. The town served briefly as Dale County's seat before Ozark took that role in 1870, and Newton incorporated in 1887. The Choctawhatchee River runs just north and west of town; in the steamboat era, the river was navigable from Choctawhatchee Bay in Florida to Newton. Farms and river roads now frame a small community within the Ozark micropolitan area.

Newton Elementary School gives the town a local school center, while Dale County services and nearby Ozark handle larger errands. The river remains the strongest geographic feature, with old bridges and railroad structures recalling the transportation network that once connected the town to the wider Wiregrass. Newton's Civil War memory includes a March 1865 battle involving local Home Guard troops and Florida cavalry. It is an Alabama town with a former county-seat role, a river on two sides, and a farming present shaped by the roads around it.
