About Newton

Newton is the seat of Newton County, a Mississippi town whose railroad history is written in brick. The Alabama & Vicksburg Railroad reached the area in 1860, and a second line arrived through town in 1904–05, turning Newton into a junction and a regional transfer point for lumber and cotton. Union troops struck Newton’s Station during Grierson’s Raid in 1863, burning the depot and tearing up the tracks. The 1904 depot now stands as a Mississippi Landmark. Newton is an east-central Mississippi town where rail lines, timber, cotton, and Civil War history all meet.
