Niagara, WI

Niagara is a Marinette County city on the Menominee River, founded in 1900 beside the water and the falls that powered its industrial story. The name comes from an Iroquois word for thundering waters, which makes sense when the river squeezes through rock near Little Quinnesec Falls and Piers Gorge. Paper mills, dams, logging, and rail bridges gave the young city a working center; Wisconsin Historical Society photographs still show the Niagara paper mill and its dam in the 1930s.

Today the river does double duty. Riverside Park has a boat launch, looping trails, and soccer fields, while Heights and Memorial parks carry baseball, softball, playgrounds, and summer Music in the Park. The Wisconsin side of Menominee River State Recreation Area adds hiking, fishing, kayaking, hunting, and whitewater around Piers Gorge and nearby falls. The city, Niagara Township, and neighboring Michigan communities share this river corridor. Niagara's local scoop is that the same waterway that ran mills now supplies the launch, trail, overlook, and backdrop for everyday recreation.
