Niantic, IL

Niantic is a village in western Macon County, Illinois, twelve miles west of Decatur and about thirty miles east-northeast of Springfield. Joseph Strickling settled the area in 1825, and the first schoolhouse followed in 1847. The village sits on the western edge of the county, where drainage runs toward tributaries of the Sangamon River. Its name came from a vote among early residents, who chose the name of a Native American people from Connecticut when the town was being established. Niantic's early map was shaped by movement: settlers headed west, then a village took form around a store, school, water tower, and the grain elevators that still mark its agricultural setting.

The Potawatomi Trail of Death passed through Niantic in 1838, and a marker in the village park keeps that history visible beside the water tower. Current civic life is tied to Sangamon Valley Community Unit School District 9, including Sangamon Valley High School, while the village hall and fire station sit within the same compact footprint. The place is close enough to Decatur for county-scale services while remaining a small settlement with its own school, civic buildings, and agricultural edges. Niantic's story runs from a 1825 cabin and an overland trail to a present-day village organized around the same western Macon County crossroads.
