Nicholls, GA

Nicholls sits on Georgia 32 in eastern Coffee County, 13 miles east of Douglas and 10 miles west of Alma. The city was founded in 1895 and incorporated in 1903, and its Wiregrass setting connects it to the agricultural and highway geography of south Georgia. The 2020 census counted 3,147 residents, a figure that includes the Coffee County Correctional Facility within city limits. That facility is operated by CoreCivic, so the population number carries an institutional component that matters when reading the city's scale.

Present-day Nicholls centers its civic routine on City Hall along Van Streat Highway, where municipal office hours, water information, notices, and emergency contacts are posted. Nicholls Elementary School at 704 Van Streat Highway serves grades prekindergarten through fifth within Coffee County Schools. Georgia 32 connects the city to Douglas and Alma, while the school, City Hall, and county road all sit in the same corridor. The correctional facility adds another institutional presence to a city otherwise oriented toward the surrounding Wiregrass.
