Nightmute, AK

Nightmute is a small Yup'ik village on Nelson Island in western Alaska, located along the Toksook River roughly 18 miles inland from Toksook Bay and 100 miles west of Bethel. With no roads connecting it to the outside world, travel revolves around the seasons. Residents rely on small bush planes landing on the local gravel airstrip, boats and cargo barges navigating the river in summer, and snowmachines running along frozen winter trails.

The community sits directly on the river's edge, which means dealing with shifting permafrost, spring ice jams, and steady bank erosion. Over the years, locals have adapted by moving utility lines and buildings farther inland and reinforcing the waterfront to protect homes, boardwalks, and the village store. Daily life here requires practical self-reliance, centered on traditional subsistence fishing and the close community ties typical of rural island living.
