Nineveh, IN

Nineveh is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Johnson County's Nineveh Township. Its name comes from Nineveh Creek, which was named for hunter Nineveh Berry after he fell into the stream while pursuing a deer. That story gives the settlement a direct link to the creek running through its local history. The community sits within the rural lake country around Cordry and Sweetwater, with the Cordry-Sweetwater branch library providing a recognizable civic address on Nineveh Road.

Nineveh's best-known school landmark gained a second life on film. The old Nineveh Elementary School was renamed 'Hickory High School' for the 1985 movie 'Hoosiers,' and the last class attended there during filming. After consolidation, students moved to Indian Creek Elementary in Trafalgar; the old building later burned. Today, the library and the road name remain local touchpoints, while the film preserves the school building in public memory. The creek, library, lakes, and basketball history all point back to the same small township community.
