Nipinnawasee, CA

Nipinnawasee is a Madera County census-designated place in the Sierra foothills, north of Ahwahnee along State Route 49. The developed area follows the CDP, a roughly three-square-mile rural community whose roads and homes sit along the highway. The name arrived around 1908 through Edgar B. Landon, who brought it from Michigan; local histories tie the word to deer. The community drains toward Peterson Creek and the Fresno River. It is a road-and-services community as much as a named settlement.

Life in Nipinnawasee is organized around private wells, private septic systems, roadside drainage, and CAL FIRE service from the Ahwahnee station about three miles south. The county's current community profile lists those water, wastewater, drainage, and fire systems as sufficient and identifies the area as a very high fire-hazard zone. State Route 49 is the main road north toward Mariposa and south toward Ahwahnee and Oakhurst. Nipinnawasee is a foothill settlement where the highway and service systems matter as much as the place name.
