About Nipomo

Rancho Nipomo's surviving adobe gives this San Luis Obispo County community a direct connection to early California history. The land was originally Chumash territory, and the Mexican government granted the more than 48,000-acre rancho to sea captain William Goodwin Dana in 1837. His family residence, built in 1839, is now the Dana Adobe & Cultural Center. Guided adobe tours, a permanent exhibit, a museum, a mission-grape vineyard, the original tallow vat, gardens, and miles of trails make the site both a historical institution and an open-space resource. The center also holds Heritage Day each fall; the 2026 program includes living-history demonstrations, music and dance, hands-on activities, reenactments, and guided tours. A July 2025 report described a 130-acre property with more than four miles of trails and recorded 1,782 students on field trips during the 2024–25 school year.

Capt Dana Tree Nipomo

The 2020 census recorded 18,176 people in the Nipomo CDP. Nipomo Community Park is the community's other major public gathering place. San Luis Obispo County identifies the 137-acre property as Nipomo's only public park. Its facilities include group-use areas, four softball diamonds, a football-and-soccer field, tennis courts, horseshoes, sand volleyball, an off-leash dog area, and a children's play area. A dedicated skate park opened there in May 2023 with bowls, quarter pipes, grind ledges, rails, and a stair set. These facilities concentrate much of Nipomo's organized outdoor recreation in one site rather than a municipal park network. Regional Transit Authority Route 10 adds a north-south public-transit link through Nipomo, connecting the community with San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach, Santa Maria, and Orcutt.
