Niverville, NY

Niverville is a hamlet and census-designated place in northern Columbia County, with the hamlet at the south end of Kinderhook Lake. The CDP reaches around the lake and east into the Town of Chatham, so its geography is broader than the cluster of buildings people may picture as Niverville. Kinderhook Lake covers about 350 acres, runs roughly 1.6 miles, and drains through Kinderhook Creek toward the Hudson. NY Route 203 follows the east side of the lake, with Valatie about two miles southwest and Nassau about six miles northeast.

The lake has carried the local calendar for generations. Kinderhook Lake Park, also called the Old Park, began as a picnic and meeting place in 1870. In the early twentieth century the Albany-Hudson Railway helped create Electric Park, an amusement ground with electric lights, rides, a giant slide, plays, and dancing before it closed during World War I. Today Kinderhook Lake Corporation handles lake stewardship, including dam work, water-quality monitoring, and weed programs. That gives Niverville a distinctive rhythm: a small hamlet shaped by a large body of water, with Kinderhook Central School District and the surrounding roads tying it into the wider Kinderhook and Chatham area.
