Noatak, AK

Noatak stands on the west bank of the Noatak River in the Northwest Arctic Borough, about 55 miles north of Kotzebue and north of the Arctic Circle. Iñupiat people have lived along the river for generations; the present community began as a nineteenth-century fishing and hunting camp before becoming a permanent settlement. The river is still the organizing fact of life, carrying boats, fish, wildlife, and travel through a landscape preserved in part by Noatak National Preserve. Noatak Airport provides the main air connection, but access remains subject to weather, river conditions, and the limits of a remote Arctic village.

Fishing, hunting, trapping, and time at family fish camps remain part of the seasonal calendar, alongside school, local government, and air service. Noatak School serves students from the village, while the airport’s planned relocation responds to erosion along the riverbank. That project captures the present challenge: the same river that supports food, travel, and cultural continuity is also threatening the runway, water system, landfill, and central developed area. Noatak is a river community in the fullest sense, with daily life shaped by the land’s abundance and its changing edge.
