About Nome

Nome is a coastal city on the southern Seward Peninsula of Alaska, situated on the Norton Sound of the Bering Sea. Long home to the indigenous Iñupiat people, the area experienced a massive population stampede after gold was discovered in its beach sands in 1899. Today gold mining remains a major economic contributor, and the city serves as the historic finish line for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. The University of Alaska Fairbanks operates its Northwest Campus here.
