Noorvik, AK

Noorvik is a close-knit Iñupiat village set along the Kobuk River, roughly 45 miles east of Kotzebue in northwest Alaska. Fittingly, the name translates to "a place that is moved to," dating back to the early 1900s when families relocated here from nearby coastal and river settlements. Daily life is closely tied to the water and the surrounding wilderness, with boats in the summer and snowmachines in the winter serving as the primary ways to travel and hunt.

For families, the local Aqqaluk Noorvik School provides education for pre-K through twelfth grade and serves as a central hub for community activities. Traditional Iñupiaq heritage remains strong throughout town, balancing modern community services with seasonal subsistence traditions. Noorvik even made national headlines as the official kickoff site for the 2010 US Census, scheduled in midwinter so workers could count residents before everyone headed out to spring hunting and fishing camps.
