Noorvik, AK

Noorvik is an Iñupiat city in Alaska’s Northwest Arctic Borough on the Nazuruk Channel of the Kobuk River, about 76 kilometers east of Kotzebue. In Iñupiaq, Noorvik means “a place that is moved to.” The community was established in the early 1900s by Kowagmuit Iñupiat fishermen and hunters from Deering, with other settlers coming from Oksik farther up the river. Its location remains closely tied to the Kobuk River landscape and the NANA region. River travel and seasonal movement remain essential parts of how the community is reached and understood.

Aqqaluk Noorvik School, operated by the Northwest Arctic Borough School District, serves students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The community also speaks a Noorvik variety of Iñupiaq, keeping language and schooling in the same local setting. Noorvik was the first town counted in the 2010 census, when enumerators arrived before residents left for seasonal hunting and fishing grounds. That detail captures the practical rhythm of a river community where school, city services, language, and seasonal travel all meet.
