Norlina, NC

Norlina is a Warren County town of 920 residents in the 2020 census, built around a railroad junction near the Virginia line. In 1837 the place was called Ridgeway Junction, then became known as the Woodyard in the 1860s as trains stopped for fuel, water, and supplies. The Seaboard and Raleigh lines turned that stop into a working crossroads, with traffic splitting toward Raleigh, Richmond, and the coastal ports. The name Norlina is usually tied to a shortened North Carolina, though local accounts leave some room for debate.

Railroad history still gives Norlina its shape. The old junction, depot area, and town streets sit close to the routes that made Warren County's main inland trading point. The town's highway connections now carry most daily movement, but the seal's locomotive is a good shorthand for how it began. Homes, businesses, churches, and county roads gather around a place that once sold wood and water to passing trains. Norlina is a small northeastern North Carolina town whose identity was laid down by a junction and kept alive by the traffic around it.
