Normangee, TX

Normangee is a town in Leon and Madison counties at the junction of Farm Roads 39 and 3, the Old San Antonio Road, and the railroad corridor. The Houston and Texas Central Railway reached the site in 1905, and the Trinity and Brazos Valley Railway followed in 1907. Settlers moved in from Rogers Prairie, carrying buildings and the post office to the new station. The town was named for local judge and legislator Norman G. Kittrell and reincorporated in 1919 after an earlier incorporation ended. The 2020 census counted 495 residents.

The rail line is gone, but its route still matters: Farm Road 39 was built on the former Houston and Texas Central roadbed in the 1940s. Normangee's current main-street map includes banks, groceries, antique and thrift shops, health care, agricultural suppliers, and other small businesses. Normangee Independent School District serves local students, with the Panthers playing at Normangee High School. Most of town lies in Leon County, with a small piece in Madison County. Normangee is a railroad town that became a county-line crossroads and still works at that scale.
