Norris, SC

Norris grew from the Cateechee community around a cotton mill on Twelve Mile River. The first cotton mill in Pickens County opened there in 1895, using a dam on the river, and the town took shape alongside the railroad that served the mill. That beginning still gives Norris a strong physical story: water, rail, and mill work came first, then streets and homes gathered around them. The town later took the name of Colonel Daniel Keating Norris, who moved to the Upstate in the late nineteenth century.

Today Norris sits within the Greenville–Mauldin–Easley metropolitan area while keeping its own small-town scale. Pickens County's school system serves students across the county, and nearby roads lead toward Easley, Greenville, lakes, and the foothills. Twelve Mile River remains the place's most useful point of orientation, tying the old mill site to the landscape around it. Norris feels less like a bedroom label on a metro map and more like a river town whose daily roads happen to reach a much larger Upstate network.
