North Charleston, SC

North Charleston serves as the industrial and economic heart of the Lowcountry. If you are moving here for work, you will find major employers across the city, including the Boeing Dreamliner facility, the active Joint Base Charleston airfield, Mercedes-Benz Vans, and several large regional healthcare systems. The city sits right at the intersection of Interstate 26 and Interstate 526, making it easy to commute to downtown Charleston, Mount Pleasant, or Summerville. While rush-hour traffic along these main corridors can get busy, living here puts you close to thousands of jobs and quick regional transit links.

The city's neighborhoods have deep roots tied to maritime and military history. Historic communities like Liberty Hill and Pettigru were founded in the 1870s, while classic residential areas like Chicora Place and Charleston Heights grew around the historic U.S. Navy Yard during the early twentieth century. When the naval shipyard closed in the 1990s, it marked a major shift for the community. Today, those former defense corridors are seeing steady new investment, bringing new life to mid-century bungalows, brick ranches, and vintage cottages with plenty of character.

Because North Charleston stretches across three different counties, everyday life looks different depending on the area you choose. Park Circle offers a charming, walkable village feel with independent restaurants, local breweries, and bakeries clustered along East Montague Avenue. Over by the airport, the North Charleston Coliseum, Performing Arts Center, and Tanger Outlets create a lively entertainment hub for concerts, hockey games, and weekend shopping. Further north along Dorchester Road and Rivers Avenue, you will find quiet residential subdivisions, big-box stores, and convenient everyday amenities.

For weekend downtime and getting outdoors, the city has invested heavily in community recreation. Park Circle recently debuted a massive renovation featuring a huge, fully accessible playground, a farmers market pavilion, open green spaces, and community art studios. Just east along the Cooper River, Riverfront Park offers peaceful waterfront walking trails, a fishing pier, and historic officer housing shaded by grand oak trees. It is a favorite local spot for evening strolls, family picnics, and outdoor concerts right on the water.
