North Collins, NY

North Collins occupies southern Erie County in the Southtowns, a town of farm roads and village centers about twenty miles south of Buffalo. The area was first settled in 1809, and the town was carved from Collins in 1852 as the Town of Shirley. Residents asked the state to restore the name North Collins in 1853, and the change stuck. The town has always been larger than its principal village: hamlets once had their own post offices, while farms and crossroads filled the space between them. U.S. 62, NY 75, and NY 249 still carry traffic through that rural grid.

North Collins keeps agriculture in the foreground. Town planning documents treat farming as a working activity that needs room for equipment, seasonal traffic, and day-to-day operations, while the village provides the civic services and local businesses that hold the community together. The Southtowns position brings Buffalo within reach for jobs and shopping, but the town’s own rhythm follows planting, harvest, school schedules, and road maintenance. North Collins has the feel of a place assembled from several small centers, with the village at the heart and the fields doing much of the talking around it.
