North Freedom, WI

North Freedom is a Sauk County village along the Baraboo River, with 603 residents in the 2020 census. The village began at a crossroads known as Hackett’s Corners, then took shape around the Chicago & North Western Railway’s depot in the 1870s. It briefly carried the name Bessemer during an iron-mining boom before returning to North Freedom in 1890. Baraboo and Reedsburg now handle much of the wider county map, while North Freedom keeps its own village center.

The Mid-Continent Railway Museum has operated here since 1963, running historic trains and preserving the short-line way of life that once made the depot the town’s main connection. North Freedom Elementary, opened in 1902, remains part of the Baraboo School District, and the Baraboo River runs through the setting. Its rail history is still part of the village’s daily character, not a distant museum chapter. North Freedom is a Wisconsin village where railroad history, a century-old school, river country, and the larger Baraboo area all meet.
