About North Miami Beach

Despite its name, North Miami Beach no longer extends to the Atlantic; the nearest oceanfront lies across the Intracoastal Waterway in Sunny Isles Beach. The first non-Indigenous settlement was platted in 1881, and the municipality used the name Fulford-by-the-Sea in 1926 before becoming North Miami Beach in 1931. The 2020 census recorded 43,676 residents. An all-wood Fulford–Miami Speedway seated 12,000 spectators and hosted the Fisher Cup Race on February 22, 1926, a forerunner of the Sebring and Daytona races. The city also contains a 12th-century Spanish monastery that William Randolph Hearst purchased, dismantled, and shipped to the United States in the 1920s; it was reassembled in North Miami Beach during the 1950s.
