North Port, FL

North Port spreads across 104.1 square miles of southern Sarasota County, and its map contains several very different versions of Southwest Florida. Older platted neighborhoods follow an extensive road and drainage-canal grid. Myakkahatchee Creek, the Myakka River, and over 80 miles of freshwater canals carry water through the city, while most of the 8,593-acre Myakka State Forest lies inside its boundary. Farther south, Wellen Park forms a newer master-planned center around shops, housing, and CoolToday Park. Interstate 75 crosses the northern part of the city. The map is dispersed: a North Port address may be near City Hall and the older canal grid, within Wellen Park, or beside wooded land and waterways many miles from either center. The city's unusual size began with an unusually small electorate. On June 16, 1959, 21 registered voters, all employees of General Development Corporation, approved a 5.5-square-mile city called North Port Charlotte; incorporation became official two days later.

Within about 18 months, annexation expanded it to roughly 103 square miles. Residents voted 925–188 in 1974 to shorten the name to North Port, separating its civic name from neighboring Port Charlotte. By the 2020 census, the population had reached 74,793, a striking change from the corporation-created municipality's first vote. The early expansion left a lasting practical consequence: the city government serves a land area far larger than its first settled neighborhoods, including forest, canals, newer communities, and long stretches of local road. Wellen Park shows how another center has developed inside that boundary. CoolToday Park opened in 2019 as the Atlanta Braves' spring-training home and also hosts Florida Complex League baseball and special events.

Its game schedule gives the southern part of North Port a recurring regional draw. Sarasota Memorial broke ground on Wellen Park's $507 million hospital campus in November 2025, and city reporting still described it as under construction in 2026. It was not yet an operating hospital. The ballpark, emerging medical campus, and Wellen Park's planned commercial core differ from the older pattern of houses distributed along canals and arterial roads. Each section has a different mix of nearby institutions, roads, canals, and wooded land. Water gives North Port both its most distinctive public places and a practical condition of living there. The city sits at the low end of the Big Slough watershed, and municipal emergency guidance warns that extended rain can flood roads and isolate properties.

Myakka State Forest protects pine flatwoods, marshes, and river frontage, with trails and primitive campsites reached from River Road. Warm Mineral Springs carries an older human record: mineralized water preserved human remains, tools, animal bones, and plant material that made the site archaeologically and paleontologically important. The spring is Florida's only natural warm spring and averages 85 degrees year-round. As of August 2026, swimming continued through temporary admissions and restroom facilities, while buildings damaged by Hurricanes Elsa and Ian remained closed. A $16.7 million rehabilitation of three historic structures began in July 2026, with completion still ahead. Visitors currently step into the warm water as preservation work proceeds behind the closed complex.
