North Port, FL

North Port is one of the largest cities by land area in Florida, covering more than one hundred square miles in southern Sarasota County. Because the city is so spread out, living here feels very different depending on which neighborhood you choose. The northern and central sections feature quiet, sprawling residential areas woven between miles of freshwater canals and pine woods. Meanwhile, the southern end revolves around Wellen Park, a polished master-planned development packed with new subdivisions, walkable town center shops, and dining. Interstate 75 runs right through town, making it easy to commute north toward Sarasota or south toward Fort Myers. North Port originally started as a small development project in the late 1950s, but rapid growth quickly transformed it into one of the region's biggest population hubs.

Because the city boundaries grew so quickly in its early days, North Port offers an unusually spacious, low-density feel for Southwest Florida. You will find plenty of single-family homes with large yards, room for boat trailers, and no strict HOA rules across the older neighborhoods. On the other hand, newer areas like Wellen Park provide resort-style community amenities, modern clubhouses, and planned events. A major perk of the area is CoolToday Park, the state-of-the-art spring training home of the Atlanta Braves. Even outside of spring baseball season, the stadium hosts concerts, farmers markets, youth tournaments, and movie nights that bring the community together throughout the year.

Everyday conveniences and healthcare options continue to expand quickly across the city. Sarasota Memorial Health Care System is building a major new hospital campus in Wellen Park, which will bring full-service emergency and inpatient medical care much closer to local residents. When moving here, keep in mind that daily life looks different across town. If you live along the canal grid, you will likely depend on Tamiami Trail or Price Boulevard for your main grocery runs and errands. You will also want to research flood zones and drainage before buying. Because North Port sits in a low-lying watershed lined with creeks and canals, prolonged tropical downpours can lead to standing water on certain local roads.

Outdoor recreation is a huge draw for residents who love the authentic Florida landscape. Myakka State Forest borders the city with thousands of acres of pine flatwoods, hiking and equestrian trails, primitive campsites, and direct access to the Myakka River for kayaking and fishing. North Port is also home to Warm Mineral Springs Park, Florida's only natural warm mineral spring, where the water stays at a soothing 85 degrees year-round. While the historic park buildings are undergoing long-term restoration following past storm damage, the spring remains open for daily swimming and soaking.
