About North Santee

North Santee is the Clarendon County CDP on the northeast shore of Lake Marion, where I-95 crosses the lake and US 15 and US 301 meet the interstate at Exit 102. Summerton is about seven miles northeast and Santee about five miles southwest, so the local map is organized by a lake crossing and nearby towns as much as by a conventional center. Lake Marion was created between 1939 and 1942 as part of Santee Cooper’s hydroelectric and navigation project.

At the northern end of the CDP, Santee Indian Mound–Fort Watson sits within the Santee National Wildlife Refuge. The mound dates to roughly 1200–1400 AD and later carried a British garrison that controlled the Santee River and the road between Charleston and Camden before American forces under Francis Marion captured it. The refuge now combines a National Register historic site with a waterfowl sanctuary and other protected habitat. North Santee’s local picture is a meeting of interstate travel, reservoir shoreline, and a much older cultural landscape.
