North Shore, CA

Tucked along the northeastern edge of the Salton Sea, North Shore is a quiet desert community with wide-open skies and a unique history. Back in the 1950s and 1960s, it drew crowds of boaters and vacationers to the water. Today, the town is much smaller and slower-paced, home to around 3,500 residents. The historic North Shore Yacht Club has found new life as a community center, and the nearby state recreation area gives locals front-row access to peaceful shoreline walks, mountain views, and incredible birdwatching.

Daily life here is simple and neighborly, centered around North Shore Elementary and local community gatherings. For major errands, healthcare, and bigger shopping trips, residents take Highway 111 north into neighboring Mecca, Coachella, or Indio. Living out here means adjusting to intense summer heat and planning trips into town for essentials, but it also offers affordable housing, stunning desert scenery, and a quiet, tight-knit environment far removed from the bustle of larger cities.
